Cerakote Ceramic Coating vs PPF: Which One Is Right for You (and When to Combine Them)

If you’ve been shopping for paint protection in Victoria, you’ve probably heard both terms: ceramic coating and PPF. They’re often mentioned together, but they do very different jobs.

We’ve been caring for vehicles across Greater Victoria since 2013, and this is one of the questions we hear most. Here’s a plain-English breakdown to help you decide.

What is PPF (paint protection film)?

Paint protection film is a clear, physical film applied over your paint. Its job is to take the hits so your paint doesn’t. It’s designed to help protect against rock chips, light scratches and the everyday wear that comes from driving.

At Signature Detailing, we install LLumar Valor PPF, which comes with a 12-year warranty.

What is a ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating is a hard, hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer bonded to your vehicle’s surfaces. It adds gloss, makes the vehicle much easier to clean, and helps resist chemicals and UV.

What it isn’t is chip protection. A coating is very thin, so it won’t stop a rock on the highway from chipping your paint. That’s the job of PPF.

We use Cerakote Professional Ceramic Coating. It’s backed by Cerakote’s Best-In-Class 5 Year Limited Warranty (kept active with our twice-yearly Ceramic Maintenance Wash), and when it’s maintained properly or the vehicle is kept in a garage, it can even last beyond that.

Ceramic coating vs PPF: what’s the difference?

The simplest way to think about it:

  • PPF = physical protection against rock chips and scratches.
  • Ceramic coating = gloss, easier cleaning, and chemical and UV resistance.

One protects against impacts. The other protects against the elements and makes upkeep easier. Neither one replaces the other.

Is ceramic coating worth it in Victoria’s weather?

Victoria’s wet months, rain and road grime are a big part of why our customers choose a coating. A hydrophobic surface helps water bead and sheet off, and dirt tends to release more easily when you wash. That means less scrubbing and less time spent keeping your vehicle looking its best.

It’s still important to wash regularly. A coating makes cleaning easier, but it doesn’t make a vehicle maintenance-free.

Who is PPF best for?

PPF is a great fit if you:

  • Do a lot of highway driving, where rock chips are common
  • Have a new vehicle and want to keep the front end looking clean
  • Own a vehicle with paint you really want to preserve

Who is a ceramic coating best for?

Cerakote is a great fit if you:

  • Want strong gloss and easier washing
  • Want protection from the elements, like UV and chemical contaminants
  • Prefer a lower upfront cost than full PPF

Why many people combine PPF and ceramic coating

For many of our customers, the best answer is both. A common setup is PPF on the high-impact areas, like the front end, and Cerakote on the rest of the vehicle for gloss and easier cleaning.

That way, the areas most likely to get chipped have physical protection, and the rest of the vehicle gets the gloss and easier cleaning of a coating.

How much do ceramic coating and PPF cost in Victoria?

Here’s our current pricing. All prices are plus tax.

Cerakote Professional Ceramic Coating: from $1,400 plus tax (higher for trucks and SUVs, subject to inspection). Every package includes:

  • A wash and decontamination
  • Single-stage paint correction
  • Panel prep
  • A take-home aftercare kit

Add-ons: Cerakote wheel coating and glass coating are $200 each plus tax on their own, or $100 each plus tax when added to a full Cerakote coating package.

Brand-New Vehicle Offer: $200 off any Cerakote coating package for brand-new vehicles or vehicles in brand-new condition, subject to inspection. These vehicles still get a full prep and a minor polish if required.

Keeping your warranty active: Your Cerakote Best-In-Class 5 Year Limited Warranty stays active with our twice-yearly Ceramic Maintenance Wash. It’s regularly $250 plus tax, and $200 plus tax for Cerakote customers (20% off).

LLumar Valor PPF:

  • Full Front from $2,500 plus tax (always includes headlights)
  • Full Vehicle Wrap from $5,500 plus tax

Which one should you choose?

If rock chips are your main worry, start with PPF. If you want gloss, easier cleaning and protection from the elements, Cerakote is a great choice. And if you want the most complete protection, combining the two is well worth considering.

Every vehicle is a little different, so we’re always happy to take a look at yours and talk through what makes sense for how you drive. Final pricing is subject to inspection.
